Design patterns

I've established and documented several design patterns, components, and page layouts to help my product team and others improve speed, consistency, and user experience.

Working on the same product for several years allowed me to identify recurring patterns and layout needs across multiple use cases. When the necessary design patterns didn’t exist in IBM’s Carbon Design System, I took the initiative to create, test, and document them for our team—patterns that are now actively used.

As a member of the Design System Adoption Guild (DSAG), I co-led workgroups to establish, document, and publish two patterns (edit and filter), which have since been adopted by multiple IBM Software teams to enhance efficiency and design consistency. I also helped design and development teams stay informed on existing and emerging Carbon patterns and components, providing implementation guidance to ensure consistency and best practices.

Pattern examples

  1. Data table filter panel. Co-led the workgroup that established a common way for IBM product users to easily drill down to specific events, based on a wide variety of criteria and selection types, from logs potentially containing many millions. Consulted with the developers of the pattern to ensure the component was built to spec. Built the Figma component to enable designers to prototype faster.
  2. Edit and update pattern. Co-led the workgroup that crafted tailored guidance for edit flows, ensuring alignment with the complexity and context of the data. Beyond contributing flows published to Carbon for IBM products, I designed specific create and edit workflows for my product, incorporating a draft-to-publish process that allowed users to make changes more safely and confidently.

Key Impact

  1. Enabled teams to efficiently deliver recognizable and consumable patterns for Verify and other IBM product users.
  2. Helped advance the adoption of Carbon patterns, aligning products with IBM’s design standards.

“Hi Shelley! I wanted to reach out again about this filtering panel design, namely because our dev team has implemented it…Much of this was leverage from your designs, so thanks!!”
